Research
Objectives
The purpose of Korean ITER participation is to develop and obtain the fusion related technology and develop an independent and environment- friendly energy source. For this Korea will pursue the followings:
-
Core technological for fusion energy commercialization.
International experimental fusion reactor construction
-
Paricipation of Fostering the human resources for DEMO construction technology
Technology necessary for the DEMO construction and experts
-
Independent energy source
97% of the total energy source is imported from abroad. Korea must find an independent energy source for its security
-
Developing new high technology
Development of the fusion related ultra low temperature, ultra vacuum technology will have the ripple effect on Korea’s economical growth
-
Obtaining an environment-friendly energy source
The most feasible and practical solution to the global warming problem is to participate in the ITER project
Future Direction of the Project
-
Periodical delivery of the allotted ITER procurement package
Korea is to manufacture and supply the nine core technology including the superconducting magnet, vacuum, tritium box/transporter, power supply system, Blanket
-
ITER Organization Joint administration participation
Sharing the cost burden among the participating nations and dispatching human resource
*Korea has 9.09% of the vote, one ITER deputy director position, and the right to be a part of the organization’s staff
-
Establishing the foundation for the ITER procurement
In order to supply the package on-time as referred in the procurement schedule, process control, QA/QC system, and integrated project management system must be established and operated.
-
Obtaining the core technology for the commercial fusion technology
Korea can learn the up-to-date fusion reactor manufacturing technology and operation technology through the ITER construction operation process
ITER Korea Project
ITER Korea Project can be divided into five main areas; in kind procurement, human resource in kind procurement, in cash procurement, core technology development, and domestic agency operation.
In Kind Procurement
ITER Korea Procurement Items
- Critical Path Items - TF CICC, Vacuum Vessel Main & Port procurement
- Tokamak Main Subsystem - Blanket First Wall & Shield Block, Assembly Tooling, Thermal Shield procurement
- Ancillary System - Tritium Storage and Delivery System, AC/DC Convertors, Diagnostics procurement
Dispatching the Experts
Our goal is to have the dispatched Korean experts to the ITER International Organization to directly participate in the construction; through this Korea can foster the experts necessary for the future DEMO construction
In-Cash Contribution
Korea is obligated to provide the on-time in cash procurement delivery for ITER International Organization operation and construction. This includes the direct construction cost, joint R&D cost, directly employed experts service cost, directly employed support manpower hiring cost
Core Technology Development
Necessary core technology for the reactor construction R&D area and for building national foundation
- Maximizing the direct participation opportunity in construction for Korean companies through the joint participation in CODAC R&D in core technology development area; Developing the design, manufacturing, and testing technology through TBM R&D
Domestic Agency Operation
Managing the procurement package, Integral project management
- Smooth collaboration work with the ITER International Organization
- ITER and fusion reactor operating technology gain through ITPA (International Tokamak Physics Activity) joint research project participation, support, and knowledge management.
- Procurement package management includes all procurement related activities on design, R&D management, technology requirement framing, manufacturing contract, manufacturing and management, delivery, etc.
- Construction technology for DEMO through technology management
- Integral project management applies to manpower, process, quality control area
