At the Renaissance Hotel in Aix-en-Provence, France, on November 19, 2019, the Ministry of Science and ICT signed the Korea-EU Technology Management Plan (TMP) for full-scale promotion of a nuclear fusion energy research project with the European Commission.

The TMP stipulates the specific cooperation fields and implementation systems of the two countries for the operation and experiments of the International Thermonuclear Experimental Reactor (ITER) and for research on a demonstration power station for future electricity production.

In particular, the two countries agreed to promote research on “mitigation of device damage due to instantaneous collapse of plasma”, which is being promoted by each country with the support of the ITER organization as a top-priority cooperation project for the steady state operation of the ITER device. The conclusion of the TMP this time will enable mutual sharing of test data between KSTAR of Korea and JET of the EU, as well as joint experiments using research equipment from each other.
