KFE signs MOU with CIEMAT of Spain

Korea and Spain have initiated a cooperative effort in fusion reactor engineering and technology with the aim of constructing demonstration reactors for fusion energy. This endeavor was formalized through the signing of an MoU between the KFE and Spain’s CIEMAT(Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) on September 12th.

CIEMAT, a public research institution funded by Spain’s Ministry of Science and Innovation boasts expertise in various areas, including theoretical physics, electronic engineering, reactor theory and calculations, nuclear fusion.

CIEMAT has garnered experience and know-how in designing experimental neutron source generators through its involvement in the EVEDA(Engineering Design and Engineering Validation Activities) project-which is a project for the verification and design improvement of major facilities in the IFMIF(International Fusion Materials Irradiation Facility), a collaborative effort between Japan and the EU.

Both KFE and CIEMAT will utilize their respective scientific, engineering, and research expertise and know-how to cooperate in acquiring various technologies required for constructing demonstration fusion reactors in the future. The most anticipated area of cooperation is the development of breeding blankets-which are a core component in fusion power generation, fuel cycles, material sciences, and engineering research related to fusion. Furthermore, cooperation is expected to expand into broader field of fusion science and technology, including accelerators, magnets, targeting systems, and engineering systems research for neutron generating facilities.
