KSTAR Sun of Korea, Glowing to the World

- Had first success using KSTAR heavy hydrogen fusion reaction

- Presented KSTAR research performance at Fusion Olympics FEC

- Respect from fusion scholars worldwide, who see great promise in KSTAR

□ KSTAR successfully presented its operations receiving attention from the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology (Minister Lee, Ju-ho) which cosponsored along with the IAEA ( The 23rd IAEA Fusion Energy Conference, rest IAEA FEC 2010)

□ National Fusion Research Institute (President Gyung-Su Lee) presented the performance in FEC2010 for the first overview session after the opening ceremony about the 2008 Geneva FEC which announced KSTAR’s first plasma achievement after KSTAR demonstrated advanced performance improvement and a 3rd fusion plasma experiment result which displayed progress. (KSTAR the 3rd test period: 2010.7.~11).

○ Vice President Kwan Myun of the National Fusion Research Institute Vice said KSTAR s achieved performance which resulted from the year’s aim of high temperature plasma production, neutron detection by heavy hydrogen (D) fusion reaction, plasma current(500kA) and holding time (6 minutes or more), and so on also defined his position that additional performance achievement is expected in remaining experiment periods around one month later.

□ Professor Kim Yong-Gyun of Hanyang University Department of Nuclear Power Engineering Kim, participated in joint research using KSTAR after he analyzed KSTAR ’s experiment data, declaring that the 2.45MeV calss neutron detection was a success by the fusion reaction.

○ Professor Kim’s team confirmed that the powerful heavy hydrogen fusion reaction was accomplished first in KSTAR’s vacuum container by analyzing the heavy hydrogen yield applying the world’s best heavy hydrogen-gamma ray separate ratio and energy distribution using the FADC formula.

□ Korea will present its performance through approximately 40 research papers and by poster presentations in KSTAR and ITER’s domestic supply item development field among other avenues.

○ National Fusion Research Institute's Center for Fusion Theory (Head of Center, Professor Patrick Diamond), one of the members of 'WCI: World Class Institute' supported by the Ministry of Education, Science & Technology will present 3 papers.

□ KSTAR which formed in 2007 accomplished research performance beyond all expectations through improving equipment efficiency every year after its first plasma production success in year 2008 and also emerged as the location for central equipment by the International Fusion Joint Research Center drawing the high interest of world-wide fusion specialists.

○ Internal and external fusion researchers who participated in FEC2010 showed their surprise about this performance presentation because it achieved its operation aim quickly in the stable experiment even though installation of incidental equipment of high technologies were needed in short time.

□ FEC2010 participants will visit National Fusion Research Institute - KSTAR Research Center and will look around KSTAR’s equipment and operations with the expectations of proposing various international joint research plans using KSTAR thereafter.

□ FEC2010 is the leading conference on the fusion field being held domestically. Korea is expected to lead various cooperative plans with advanced countries during the events in order to be a world fusion research hub.
