2008 Korea Science Festival
The biggest science-related festival in Korea, the "2008 Korea Science Festival" was held in Gwangju, on August 1, 2008. This 6-day event, which offered a bunch of programs ranging from Energy, Space, Climate Change, etc. to science-themed performances at the Kim Dae-Jung Convention Center attracted more than 200,000 people from all over the country.
As one of the 1,700 participating organizations, the National Fusion Research Institute showed the principle of the Fusion energy development, which will give mankind abundance and happiness in the 21st century, by introducing KSTAR, the world's largest existing Superconducting Tokamak device, which recently has successfully achieved its first Plasma, and ITER, the world's largest international cooperative R&D project, in which countries with more than half the world's population are participating to make fusion energy a reality.
During the whole exhibition a video clip was displayed to show how the first plasma in KSTAR was generated, and staff from NFRI explained the principle of plasma, the 4th state of matter, in an easy way to understand, through plasma-balls. For the younger generation, there were fusion-related puzzles and roulette quiz games, in which more than 7,000 children participated.
At the 2008 Korea Science Festival with the theme of ‘producing many men of distinguished talent, and establishing a world-leading country in Science Technology’, Science was celebrated as Culture and will be remembered by all of the audience and the press as a huge success.
